Course Description

In this webinar, you’ll learn how abandoned property is classified throughout the U.S., the key requirements of state abandoned property laws, and what to expect during an abandoned property audit. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Define (and recognize) abandoned property
• Compare and contrast abandoned property laws across the U.S., including: a) How abandoned property is classified b) When you are obligated to contact the property owners c) Identify the “dormancy period” for various categories of abandoned property d) What communication qualifies as a “contact” e) How gift certificates are treated
• Identify strategies for monitoring abandoned property
• List the typical issues that arise in an abandoned property audit
• Evaluate the pros and cons of voluntary disclosure programs

Joseph counsels clients on a wide range of state and local taxation issues and represents taxpayers in disputes with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and the New York City Department of Finance. He is the Abandoned Property Audits Practice leader and has represented large corporations in complex compliance matters such as multi-state abandoned property audits and voluntary disclosures.
