Course Description

Please join us for a comprehensive discussion on standards that professionals must adhere to as tax practitioners.  We will be covering the major governing rules, such as Treasury Circular 230, the AICPA Statements on Standards for Tax Services (SSTS), the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) and common law.  Also included will be case studies illustrating dilemmas faced by tax practitioners.  This course is ideal for CPAs, EAs, or other tax professionals.

Learning Objectives: 


  • Recognize the expectations for tax practitioners in serving clients, including the duty of confidentiality, competency and proper administration of the tax law.

  • Identify the practitioner’s obligations to disclose certain client information when representing them against the IRS.

  • Recognize the sources that govern tax practice, such as Treasury Circular 230, the SSTS, the IRC and common law.

  • Differentiate the common law standards of reasonable behavior and when a tax practioner may be subject to negligence or other types of common law causes of action.

Professor Allsion McLeod is currently a full-time Senior Lecturer at the University of North Texas, and has taught classes in Corporate Income Taxes, Multi-jurisdictional Taxation, Individual Taxes, Tax Research, Ethics and Financial Accounting. Prior to going into academia, she worked for 18 years in industry and in a Big Four accounting firm. Professor McLeod earned a law degree from Baylor School of Law, and an LL.M. degree in Taxation from Southern Methodist School of Law. She has been a licensed CPA since 1993 and has been licensed to practice law since 1992.

Allison M. (Yee) McLeod, LL.M., JD, CPA, has served as an expert witness in multi-million dollar cases involving tax litigation and accounting malpractice.

Professor McLeod is also a full-time Senior Lecturer at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.  Her courses include Ethics, Corporate Taxation, Tax Research and Financial Accounting.
