Course Description

There’s a booming increase in gig workers, independent contractors (ICs), self-employed individuals, and remote work in nearly all industries and sectors. These individuals are independent of the control of a company or corporation and often work on a contract basis with companies and because of that status, they are not considered employees of the companies who employ them.

Tax professionals, as trusted advisors, must understand all applicable IRS regulations to best help clients in these positions. Knowledge of the laws and the compliance issues surrounding them will allow practitioners to properly inform clients employing ICs on how to determine whether an individual worker is an independent contractor or a regular employee, and how to implement plans to avoid costly penalties.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the contemporary workforce of freelancers and gig workers

  • Define employees and independent contractors

  • List benefits and risks of the I/C relationship

  • Recognize the IRS & Department of Labor tests to determine status

  • List safe harbor rules and relief provisions for employers and workers

  • Identify notable court decisions

  • Recognize annual planning considerations regarding worker classification
