Course Description

Taxpayers who own or rent residential property outside New York State and continue to maintain a home in New York State or New York City may be targets for residency audits by the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.  These audits may lead to large tax bills for multiple years, with interest and penalties. This presentation will educate members regarding residency issues and financial risks, as well as raise awareness of and discover resources for the importance of planning ahead.

After graduating from Fordham Law, Leo Gabovich began his career as a litigator for the New York State Tax Department.

As a litigator, he represented the State before the Division of Tax Appeals and the Tax Appeals Tribunal. After leaving the state tax department, Leo went on to join an International Tax boutique law firm where he would represent clients in Offshore Voluntary Disclosure matters, assisting high-net-worth individuals and royalty in repatriating tax funds to the United States in return for avoiding harsher penalties and potential prosecution. He then went on to bring his expertise of International Taxation and Compliance and State and Local Tax representation as part of the team at UHY Advisors, an international public accounting and professional services firm.

Leo now primarily focuses his practices on matters relating to New York State and Federal tax controversy and compliance matters. He brings his knowledge and experience of the inner-workings of the state tax department along with his years of experience before the IRS in representing his clients for matters ranging from individual and business audits, negotiating agreements and compromises, litigating before the Division and Tribunal, and assisting with foreign information reporting compliance such as FBAR filings and the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures.
