French Antiques Dealer Kills Auditor During Tax Review

By: William Hoke

An antiques dealer in northern France allegedly stabbed a tax inspector to death during an audit review and then killed himself, according to the local prosecutor’s office.

The prosecutor, Sylvain Barbier Sainte-Marie, said during a November 22 press conference that two tax inspectors had gone to the suspect’s house in the village of Bullecourt the previous day to audit the unnamed antiques dealer’s records. The suspect allegedly threatened the inspectors, a man and a woman, with a knife and gun and tied them to chairs. The male inspector was killed, and the female inspector survived, apparently unharmed but in a state of shock. The suspect then turned the gun on himself, the prosecutor said.

“We believe this is a case of premeditated murder, as the victims had made an appointment with the suspect, so he knew he would meet them,” Barbier Sainte-Marie said. Details of the tax audit were not disclosed.

Public Accounts Minister Gabriel Attal said the tax inspector was killed because he was “simply doing his job.”
