This program is a review of the new issues raised and opportunities offered by the field of sustainability as it relates to the accounting profession.  There are vast new business opportunities for accountants to provide more services in creating internal controls, assurance, auditing, preparing reports, and certifying the accuracy of sustainability-oriented numbers produced every day by companies, government agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations.  Sustainability deals with human resources, physical resources, and financial resources. This course on sustainability makes the bold claim that “sustainability reporting” and “financial accounting” are basically two sides of the same coin. 

Learning Objectives:


  • Understand the basic and expanding definitions of “sustainability”

  • Understand how The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board Foundation Operates

  • See how accountants can play a larger role in helping create and verify sustainability numbers reported by organizations

  • Become familiar with new sustainability-oriented metrics being used today and in the future

  • Identify what additional services accountants can play in the development of sustainability metrics

  • Develop an understanding of the connection between accounting and sustainability



ISO 30414:

This program is a review of the new ISO 30414 standard and its implications for accountants, managers, and human resource specialist. While ISO 30414 is a voluntary standard, it is based on extensive elements literature that shows that human capital data are “material” to investors, can help investors make better investment decisions, and is essential for managers who want to manage their people more effectively and more productively.  This course covers the history of the standard, the key elements of the standard, and shows accountants how this standard represents a huge growth area for accountants all over the globe.

  • Identify the basic elements of the ISO 30414 standard

  • Understand how and why this standard came into being at this time

  • See the benefits of complying with at least some of the elements of the ISO 30414 standard

  • Understand the potential, expansive role of accountants in generating accurate human resources data

Herb Rubenstein is the President of Herb Rubenstein Consulting. He is the co-author of Breakthrough, Inc.: High Growth Strategies for Entrepreneurial Organizations (Financial Times/Prentice Hall, 1999). In addition, he was the lead author of  Leadership Development for Educators (Rowman and Littlefield, 2009), and the author of Leadership for Lawyers, 2ed. (American Bar Association, 2008).  He has published over 200 articles and 200 videos on business strategy, entrepreneurship, leadership, boards of directors, and improving how organizations function and deliver value which can be read and viewed at www.herbrubenstein.com.  

He taught the Capstone Course at the University of Colorado’s Graduate School of Business in the Global Energy Management.  That course was titled “Strategic Management” and he also taught the course “The Future of Energy” in London and “The Future of Energy Regulation” in Washington, DC for UC Denver.  He also served as an Adjunct Professor of Strategic Planning at George Washington University and has been an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurism at George Mason University and Colorado State University.

He has his law degree from Georgetown University, his Master of Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, a graduate degree in sociology from the University of Bristol in Bristol, England, and a Phi Beta Kappa/Omicron Delta Kappa graduate from Washington and Lee University in 1974.  At the age of 67, Herb Rubenstein became a Class A Member of the PGA (2020) and now sits on two Board of Directors Committees – DEI and Places to Play.  He passed the player’s ability test (PAT) at the age of 65 and started the largest PGA Junior League in America exclusively for scholarship kids in Brooklyn in 2016 when he became interested in expanding the game of golf to all children in America, girls and women, minorities and low-income people globally.  He has taught online for almost thirty years.
