Everyone in the accounting profession knows the importance of properly classifying workers as either employees or independent contractors. It’s one of the IRS’s biggest pet peeves, and the penalties involved can be devastating. Unfortunately, the classification process isn’t cut and dried, and the IRS’s own guidelines are pretty ambiguous. On top of that—since your clients pay less in taxes and other payroll costs for independent contractors—they are, in effect, incentivized to improperly classify their employees.
