Course Description

The explosive growth of online sales and global trade means that your clients are often selling not only across state but also international borders. This webinar will use Canada as an example of the challenges associated with sales tax compliance. We will go through the various federal and provincial sales taxes imposed in Canada and how they are similar and how they differ, including the differences between the value added taxes and provincial sales and use taxes. The webinar will also discuss the sales tax bases for the various jurisdictions, a high level discussion of nexus, and compliance and administration for non-residents.

Kal Ruprai, MBA, CPA, CMA, is the Leader of MNP’s Ontario Indirect Tax practice. Based in Toronto, Kal brings more than 20 years of experience practicing exclusively in indirect tax in government, large corporate and public accounting environments. He works closely with clients in a variety of industries to address their complex indirect tax issues and delivers effective tax planning strategies to help them achieve their goals.

Kal provides relevant and effective tax planning and business advice to national and international clients. He has extensive expertise in GST / HST and PST planning, including advising non-residents on doing business in Canada. He has also provided clients with written interpretations of complex sales tax issues and has successfully represented clients during GST / HST and PST audits and voluntary disclosures. Kal is proficient in completing success-based sales tax recovery reviews, having conducted reviews for Fortune 500 companies in a variety of industries as well as the public sector and non-profit organizations.

Kal was designated a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) in 1998 after completing an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at the University of Waterloo and earning his Master of Business Administration (MBA Co-op) from the University of Windsor. Committed to his profession, he has published papers and presented at several tax conferences held by the Chartered Public Accountants.

Ibrahim Hatia, CPA, CMA, is a Senior Manager in MNP’s Indirect Tax group in Toronto. With more than 10 years of indirect tax experience in government, public accounting and large corporate environments, Ibrahim develops customized strategies to help his clients achieve their goals. Ibrahim’s services involve all areas of Canadian indirect taxes, including GST / HST, Quebec sales tax, and the various provincial sales taxes.
