Individuals who owe the federal government more than $50,000 of taxes, penalties, and interest are at risk of having the IRS certify those tax debts to the U.S. Department of State to deny passport renewal applications or revoke or limit existing passports.
The speaker will explain:
- The types of “seriously delinquent tax debt” that are eligible to be certified to the U.S. Department of State for action;
- IRS procedures when certifying seriously delinquent tax debts;
- The notices taxpayers will receive from the IRS (and appropriate actions in response to those notices); and
- Practical strategies to administratively challenge certification of a seriously delinquent tax debt or to have a seriously delinquent tax debt decertified (and the benefits of a passport reinstated).
