Smith Marion & Co. just celebrated its 40th anniversary and currently employs just under 50 team members in three offices located in Southern California and Tennessee. More than 60% of the firm's work is concentrated in the public housing authority and non-profit sectors, while one-third comprises tax preparation and for-profit accounting. The firm expects to prepare roughly 2,500 tax returns in 2023 and performs audit and advisory work in 21 states. Pete Wesch joined the firm in 2006 and currently holds the roles of Tax Principal and innovator. He became an Enrolled Agent in 1994 and has been in practice for more than 30 years.

Pete served on the CalCPA Technology Committee for several years and is currently a member of the Cal State University San Bernardino Accounting Advisory Board. Pete and his wife, Lynda, welcomed their first grandchild in 2022 and enjoy riding horses and racing cars. Smith Marion began off-shoring work in January 2020, with a single Associate working in India. That Associate has performed accounting, audit, and review functions, as well as some limited business tax return processing. The firm added a bookkeeper in 2021 and has now expanded the India workforce to include three Tax Preparers and a part-time Administrative Assistant. Smith Marion migrated to Cloud Servers and SaaS applications for all computer functions in 2015. The firm utilizes the CCH Axcess Suite, CCH ProSystem fx Engagement, Accounting CS, and QuickBooks for its primary accounting functions.
