Course Description

This session focuses on what CPAs need to know about blockchain technology, specifically by taking a deep dive into different functionality that implementing blockchain offers to practitioners both in private industry and public practice. Comparative examples in attestation, tax analysis, and financial reporting, as well as use cases applicable for different business industries will be presented. Additionally, a wrap up and update analyzing current news events and changes in the blockchain landscape will be presented in help CPAs keep both themselves and their clients up to date in this fast moving environment.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and analyze the different use cases that blockchain technology can, and already is, having on the accounting and attestation landscape, including but not limited to audit and tax practitioners.

  • Analyze the potential changes blockchain technology will have on different industries, including clients, and the implications these changes will have for CPAs.

  • Be aware of how the regulatory landscape is changing from an organizational perspective, an accounting perspective, and the implications these changes have for organizations and individuals.

Sean is an assistant professor at the City University of New York – Lehman College. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, where he chairs the Accounting Working Group. Sean sits on the Advisory Board of Gilded and is a strategic advisor to the Central Bank Digital Currency Think Tank. Sean also serves as an Advisor to Crescent City Capital, a cryptoasset investment fund.

Sean is a widely recognized expert in the areas of blockchain and cryptoassets, especially as they connect to accounting and financial services. His thought leadership is sought after by academic and industry organizations, and includes his efforts to develop and teach the first ever courses focusing on blockchain and crypto at Lehman College beginning in 2021.

Sean has also been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting, and has been named a past winner of the NJCPA Ovation Award for Innovation. He has also been named a 40 under 40 in the accounting profession from 2017-2021 by CPA Practice Advisor and the NYSSCPA in 2021. Sean was named on the NJBIZ Power 50 in Accounting in 2021 & 2022. He was also awarded the Outstanding Young CPA of the Year Award by the AICPA in 2022.
